Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. While we appreciate the difficulties you are facing, it would appear that the CD image (ISO file) you downloaded could be corrupt. There is an easy way to verify the integrity of the Ubuntu ISO files you download. Could you please visit https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM follow the instructions and report back as to whether or not the MD5SUM verified? Thanks in advance.

well...i think is really a driver bug, i downloaded the ubuntu-10.10-desktop-amd64, not a torrent file but this time i used the ubuntu link (http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download)...after install got the same problem.

The same for me.
ASUS G51J laptop with nvidia 360M.
Downloaded ubuntu-10.10-desktop-amd64, launched from USB and then from CD - white and black blocks after showing ubuntu logo.
Is it any way to enable safe video mode for installer? Ubuntu logo with red dots are shown correctly (in one monitor configuration. when I connect second monitor - all screens full of random dots), so X server at least starts somehow.

Same issue for me too.

Asus laptop with Geforce GTS360M

I downloaded the ISO from the ubuntu link, then tried from the torrent. I even tried the alternate install, but after installing, I just get the white blocks.

On the installer menu, I think you press F6 and then check "nomodeset"

I have the same issue on my toshiba qosmio x505-q720. I'm attempting to install Ubuntu Desktop 10.10 64-bit version and during the Demo boot into Ubuntu my screen gets weird blocks of non comprehendable output. Can I do safe video mode installation and safe mode boot and then run the update driver from the Nvidia website? I can see Nvidia has a driver update for my card specifically for Linux, however, I can't get that far due the issue at hand right now.

Any input from the community would be appreciate it.

Thanks,
Bardia

I have the same problem. When I boot from a 10.10 Live CD (md5 sum verified) I get a blocky mess after a couple of minutes on the ubuntu+dots loading page. On the first run after shutting down windows, I even get cached images from window's use of the video memory! Then, after a couple more, it progressively becomes more uniformly a blocky mess of black and white.

I also have an Asus G51J, GeForce GTS 360M. I have the same experience as "Luke Burden" with the cached windows blocks in the memory etc. After a forced reboot, the blocks are white and grey. I've tried Ubuntu 10.10 64 and 32-bit releases in addition to 10.04 64-bit with the same results. All of this is with Wubi, but I have not tried a manual partition yet to see if it works.

Not sure if any of you are still trying to find a fix for this bug, but I found one method of resolving this bug fairly easily. I used the boot argument that Marius Kruger posted (nomodeset,) to boot Ubuntu in safe video mode, then I accessed the Additional Drivers feature, and used that to install the latest official nVidia drivers. After I did this Ubuntu booted up normally without any issues. Good luck!
