Bug Description

10.10 Maverick Beta [25th September 2010]

Booting from either Desktop or Alternative fails unless ACPI=off is specified.

As per workaround at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/612341, enabling ACPI=copy_dsdt allows the Ethernet card to work as well.

I assume some sort of blacklist is in place to determine which hardware should boot with ACPI=off or other options.

A video of the symptoms (on Lucid) can be seen at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOTKbrPkd94

The problem is still present in Maverick.

If you need more specific hardware info, give information on what you'd like provided and I'll post it.

Hi Martin,

Please be sure to confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily/current/ . If the issue remains, please run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 647358

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I just tested with 2.6.36-999-generic_2.6.36-999.201009281108 and, when I remove acpi=copy_dsdt from GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX in /etc/default/grub the system will not boot, exactly as before.

Please let me know if you need any further information.

Best wishes,

Martin

This bug is fixed upstream in kernel 2.6.35.8. From the changelog:

commit cc64346cc6b102a93ae8f2cc021de152d122fd43
Author: Len Brown
Date: Tue Sep 28 22:57:02 2010 -0400

ACPI: invoke DSDT corruption workaround on all Toshiba Satellite

    commit 100cf87788c0e9104f6fb1b0ff5f72f73fbbbea3 upstream.

Our list of Toshiba Satellite models that require this workaround
is growing -- so invoke the workaround for the entire product line.

    https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14679

    Signed-off-by: Len Brown
    Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman

And from comment #100 in the upstream bug at https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14679

  DMI for all Toshiba Satellite

  http://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-acpi/msg29761.html
  and
  http://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-acpi/msg30002.html
  add

  Satellite C650D
  Satellite L650D-10J

So rather than adding 2 to the list, lets combine all four
into one that applies to all Toshiba Satellite. This means
the workaround will be invoked for the entire product family.

A PPA of this kernel is available at http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/

This fix also went into kernel 2.6.36-rc6.

I have a L505D-S5983. After installing the 2.6.38-rc6 kernel and activate the acpi=copy_dsdt switch, my lappie can boot lucid without problem. Fn keys work fine, but neither hibernate nor sleep is working.

With a patched 2.6.32 karmic kernel all functions were working correctly. Too bad I have removed my karmic installation.

Martin Eve, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Maverick reached EOL on April 10, 2012.
Please see this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

We were wondering if this is still an issue in a supported release? If so, can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command in a supported release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please do not test the kernel in the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. As well, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream', and comment as to why specifically you were unable to test it.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.
