 I'm not sure why I have received this email.

 My X31 ThinkPad has no problems in switching off. The functions that I cannot use are "Suspend" and "Hibernate". If I use either of these options, then the ThinkPad closes down but with the "sleep" light (half-moon) lit. However if I then just try to re-start by, eg. raising the lid or moving the cursor, nothing happens and evntually I have to depress the on/off for more than 10 secs to force a power-off.

 The capability to "sleep" existed in the Ubuntu forerunner, Windows XP.

Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . If it remains an issue, could you run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal).
