Bug Description
Using Kubuntu Variant of Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS
Release: 10.04
This is a problem with a new release installed on new hardware on a new release, so I can't be too specific about when/how this cropped up. Can say that it's been a problem through about three kernel updates (32-21 to 32-24).
The kernel commonly reports one or more errors during boot. Usually something along the lines of "you have a serious errror with Filesystem /home or /windows (or both). Gives an option to ignore/skip mounting/manual recovery. If the problem is ignored and the system boots, there are no problems and all runs as normal. Sometimes things just hang. Typical sequences:
no problems -- everything boots normally
problem with /home -- ignore -- boots normally
problem with /home -- ignore -- problem with /windows. Must either skip mounting /windows or force restart (ctrl-alt-dlt)
problem with /windows -- again, skip mounting or restart.
I'd say that that normal boots might be 30% of the time. Given a problems with /home, ignoring it still leads to a successful boot 40-50% of the time. Anything else, just restart. Seldom have to more than once.
Here's a dmsg trace that might be associated with the problem (full dmsg appended):

CHECKED AGAINST UPSTREAM KERNELS 2.6.34.020634 AND 2.6.35-02065302 WITH THE SAME RESULTS. BOTH REPORT "Serious Errors with ..." as before
description: | updated |
Hi Andrew,
If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https:/ /wiki.ubuntu. com/KernelMainl ineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs- upstream- testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs- upstream- testing' text. Please let us know your results.
Thanks in advance.
