Ok, I'm not sure this will help, but since a few days (and no special kernel upgrade), the problem isn't appearing anymore on that Portégé R830. I can suspend to ram/resume and the brightness is ok.
I'm not really sure what changed though.
Sorry for the lack of understanding there.
