Bug Description

I'm having a guess at the package as I'm not sure whether this is a kernel issue or not.

Ubuntu 10.04 won't boot at all on this laptop. I've tried loading it from the Live CD and upgrading from an existing 9.10 installation, and neither work. I don't see any logs or terminal information, nothing happens.

I'll attach dmesg and lspci information from the 9.10 installation, in case this helps.

Please perform the following instructions, so we can determine the exact issue:
1. Press Shift during Grub boot delay to access the boot menu.
2. Select your actual Ubuntu boot line and press "e" to edit it.
3. Select the "linux" line and at the end of the line, remove "splash" and "quiet".
5. Type "ctrl + x" to boot the custom boot line.

This will disable the graphical boot (plymouth) and enable verbose logging. Please report any errors you see.

Hi Mohammed,

I've tried removing the splash and quiet from the Live CD boot options and I see some activity in the terminal which doesn't appear to indicate any problems. It generates locales and loads various services without obvious errors. I think it gets as far as trying to load the graphical interface and then everything stops and I see no further disk or CD activity.

The problem therefore seems to be in loading the graphical interface.

Can you please follow the instructions here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingCasper

I've given that a try but it doesn't help - I can't get to a shell after the boot crashes so therefore can't mount a usb stick or save any log files. I didn't see any errors prior to the terminal output disappearing.

Can you try adding i915.modeset=0 to the boot options?

Mohamed - that doesn't make any difference either.

Any other ideas? I really appreciate your attempts to help debug this.

Not really - can you remove again "quiet" and "splash" from the boot options, and then write down the last messages you can see before the freeze?

Sorry to ask you to do this - I don't have really other ideas to debug this issue.

Or you can capture a video of the boot if you can - everything can help.

Can you add "i915.modeset=1" to the boot options? (this does work according to bug 566379)

Yes, that works. I'll mark this bug as a duplicate of that one.
