Bug Description

This is a Novatech V13 laptop.

Brightness hotkeys (fn-F8 and fn-F9) don't work. The brightness applet does work, and brightness can be controlled through xbacklight.

acpi_listen does not detect any events when these keys are pressed.

WORKAROUND: boot with acpi=off

A bit more info: If I boot the laptop with acpi=off, then the brightness hotkeys work.

Hi Chris,

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

This bug should probably be closed. As explained in this[1] thread, one needs to append "acpi_osi=" to the grub boot command line in order to get the brightness hotkeys to work on the lemur (which is basically a Clevo W840T1).

Unfortunately adding acpi_osi=Linux to the grub boot command doesn't work (neither do any of the other acpi_osi= options).

Also, this laptop is a W830T, not a W830T1 (could be the difference?).

Any other suggestions gratefully received!

I take it that you also tried adding just "acpi_osi=" without anything after the "equl to" symbol as mentioned in that thread? Just confirming. Sorry if this is redundant.

Okay, if I add just "acpi_osi=" then the hotkeys work.

For info the brightness applet no longer works, and it seems as though the power manager no longer dims the display when idle.

Other power management functions appear to work though.

Cheers

Chris Hornby, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.
