Updated today, then booted O.K. to the external monitor with the laptop screen blank as desired.
I presume this bug is fixed.

radeon.modeset=0
fixes it, I think, booted a couple times O.K.

Tried it by hand on boot editing the linux line, then by altering /etc/default/grub to
quiet splash radeon.modeset=0
worked both times.

Do note on another of my pc's booting Maverick with intel driver I use
i915.modeset=0

Maverick KMS is buggy on two of my three pc's. The one that is booting O.K. has Radeon Xpress 200. I'll check it tonight to see if KMS is in fact on.

2.6.34-5 will boot with KMS on.
Ctrl-Alt-F1 switches to text screen O.K.
Ctrl-Alt-F7 to switch back to desktop fails. Screens freeze. ssh still works.
Attached is dmesg & Xorg.0.log by ssh from another pc on the net.

Btw, given that the issue shows up as a regression between two kernel versions, that pretty much points to this being a kernel bug rather than xorg. Refiling.

(Btw, when you run into problems like these, that seem to be narrowed to the kernel, please do go ahead and file directly to the kernel, I guess there's not really a need to go through xorg with these each time.)

Today's ppa still has the same problem:

Linux version 2.6.35-999-generic (root@zinc) (gcc version 4.2.3 (Ubuntu 4.2.3-2ubuntu7)) #201007281008 SMP Wed Jul 28 11:18:42 UTC 2010

radeon.modeset=0 and I'm able to boot O.K.

Without the external monitor it will boot with KMS on.

The bug does still occur with today's ppa, 2.6.35-999 Wed July 28. I did re-verify Alpha 1 2.6.34-5-generic still boots O.K. in KMS mode with the same xorg and all the other maverick updates up to July 27 so it would appear to be a kernel bug.

Alpha 2, kernels since, and today's ppa requires radeon.modeset=0 in the linux boot line to boot successfully.

I can confirm that as well. Note that in 1 out of perhaps 15 cases the X starts successfully, but there is garbage on screen instead of the ubuntu boot-up logo.

Problem still here with Maverick Alpha 3, which is daily build 20100803:

Linux version 2.6.35-14-generic (buildd@rothera) (gcc version 4.4.5 20100728 (prerelease) (Ubuntu/Linaro 4.4.4-8ubuntu1) ) #19-Ubuntu SMP Mon Aug 2 01:43:35 UTC 2010

dpkg -s xserver-xorg-video-ati | grep Version
Version: 1:6.13.1-1ubuntu1

Martin Vysny, I see the garbage too. It occurs about the time KMS would have started?

Alpha 3 CD doesn't boot either, unless linux line modified wth radeon.modeset=0

This is on a Dell Latitude D810 notebook.
The radeon.modeset=0 workaround also works here.

Upgraded to Kubuntu 10.10 Beta from Kubuntu 10.04, on reboot I see the UBUNTU 10.10 and the dots . . . . for about half a second, them I'm put to a semi-half-purple screen and it just stops there. I use the Magic Keys REISUB and reboot ok. I have an ATI HD Radeon 4830.

Doing the above mentioned radeon.modeset=0 works. I'm posting from my Kubuntu session now.

So, I guess I'm just another "Me too!" and if there's anything I can help provide to help get this fixed, I'm just and end user but I can try a few things and report back or give more info.

@jerrylamos , regarding the Ctrl+Alt+F keys, try adding "xforcevesa" to the linux line on booting. I have an older ATI and need that line or I get a white screen when I try any of the VT's

I have fixed my issue by running jokey-kde and letting it find my video card and installing the FGLRX driver and use that instead of the RADEON driver.

I can now reboot to a fully graphical UI without having to do anything.
