Bug Description

New bug raised at the request of Jeremy Foshee, to provide separate information about 577671.

Downloaded 10.04 to CD. Will not run as live CD, as keyboard and mouse nearly always freeze as soon as logon screen is displayed, whereas old CD for 8.04 LTS works normally.

Occasionally keyboard input is possible at logon, but it promptly acts as if a key is stuck down, for instance typing the alphabet in the password box would go
abccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccc
at which point keyboard and mouse freeze.

Even more rarely it is possible to logon, but the "stuck key" and then freeze happens as soon as the keyboard is used. All failures happen so soon that it is not possible to do any useful work. Slowing keyboard repeat delay and rate to minimum does not help.

Managed to install, dual boot with WinXP, by using noapic parameter at boot time. However first boot resulted in a freeze as I had not added noapic. Tried again with noapic, fine, and proceeded to download updates etc, system runs stable.

Booting in recovery mode and selecting low graphics option also results in stable system.

Mobo is Asus P4S800 with 2.4GHz processor, 512Mb memory, Nvidia Geforce 256 AGP 4X graphics (rather old), Liteon GC/N150AT/ATA lcd panel display.

Tried changing PS2 mouse and keyboard for USB but made no difference, nor did a different brand of display.

Have run ubuntu-bug -p linux as requested. Will submit this then reboot without noapic, to provoke a freeze, as it has been a few days since I did that.

After the expected freeze, will reboot without noapic and do an apport if that turns out to be the right thing to do - apologies for any incorrect answers in the quiz, but am just a beginner at this.

Tell me if there is anything else you need me to do.

Ok, provoked a logon freeze by not adding any parameters at boot, then rebooted with noapic to run the apport above.

On this freeze I was able to key in most of the characters in my password before the keyboard and mouse froze, it did not do the "stuck key" thing.

I think the on screen clock was still running.

No choice but to hold down the power button on my hardware, until the display changed to "Shutting down the computer" screen, which counted down for 60 secs then powered off.

Forgot to say: mobo bios is the most recent on offer from Asus, have not done anything to video drivers, they are as delivered on 10.04 CD.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you need anything else.

Cheers
Anthony

Anthony,
Thank you for the new bug. This will be most helpful. I have set an initial importance to this bug of Medium, but that could be changed once reviewed.

Thanks!

I noticed the following agpart lines in the kernel log.

The 16x mode is odd as the mobo only supports up to 8x and the bios correctly only offers up to 4x as that is the maximum for this old graphics card I think.

Jun 3 19:22:12 developmentsys kernel: [ 8.636730] agpgart-sis 0000:00:00.0: AGP 3.5 bridge
Jun 3 19:22:12 developmentsys kernel: [ 8.636763] agpgart-sis 0000:00:00.0: putting AGP V3 device at 0000:00:00.0 into 16x mode
Jun 3 19:22:12 developmentsys kernel: [ 8.636771] agpgart-sis 0000:00:00.0: SiS delay workaround: giving bridge time to recover
Jun 3 19:22:12 developmentsys kernel: [ 8.652439] agpgart-sis 0000:00:00.0: putting AGP V3 device at 0000:01:00.0 into 16x mode

Testing on a couple of other systems that run without the freeze fault, their graphics card is not put into a mode faster than it can support. I have no idea if this is relevant.

I also tried booting in recovery mode and going to a command line to log on. I entered my name ok, but the keyboard froze as I was typing my password - the same freeze as with a graphical user interface.

Removing irqbalance as described in bug 528720 seems to have got rid of my logon freeze problems.

I can now boot Ubuntu without adding any boot parameters, and then logon without getting any freezes.
Have rebooted several times and used it for a few hours without any recurrence yet.

none of above solved my problem,

i was using keyboard (PS/2) and mouse (USB)

i had lot problems in typing, for few moments keyboard freezes and also when left idle for lot of time.

Solution i used.
I had been provided with PS2 converter for my mouse, all i did was plugged the USB mouse into PS/2 port with converter, and everything works perfectly fine.

If any one tries this solution, please provide feedback.

With reference to Anthony Bodle's comment on 2010-05-27 that states : " Booting in recovery mode and selecting low graphics option also results in a stable system."
This is false. I've tried this and it is not true for all programs accessed. Most programs appear stable but I get a total "freeze" where nothing works as soon as I start Blender and try to move an object around in 3D space even though I have booted in recovery mode and selected low graphics option. This "freeze" happens every time.

Justin, take a look at my bug report to see if your problem is similar to mine. My system does not lockup at login and irqbalance is not the problem either, and it locks up during certain programs. Fedora 13 has the exact same problem, I tried Sabayon 5.3 and it works perfect on my system with the same setup. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-180/+bug/580695

Anthony Bodle, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available (not the daily folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.13-rc4

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.
