Bug Description

Unable to resume from second suspend (works fine one time only). Upon resuming the second time, I see no display (backlight doesn't even come on). If I have already suspended/resumed successfully once, even closing the laptop lid will cause the same problem: no display, no backlight. Ctrl+alt+backspace or REISUB seem to do nothing.

Also, after resetting the machine, networking is disabled upon the next boot. I have to re-enable networking by clicking on the NetworkManager Applet.

This is a Toshiba A305 laptop with Intel GM965/x3100 graphics. Clean installation of Ubuntu 10.04.

This seems very similar to Bug #160763, but I'm not able to determine whether it is the same problem.

Rick,

Please check that you have the latest BIOS version installed for your laptop. This is likely a symptom of a bad BIOS. We've seen a similar issue with Lenovo laptops that required a BIOS fix.

Rick,

Two things to try. First, install the 2.6.34 mainline kernel:

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.34-lucid/

See if that fixes things for you. If not, then boot with the same kernel, but add "acpi_sleep=sci_force_enable" to the kernel command line. To do this, edit /etc/default/grub and add the text to the end of the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT variable. Then run "sudo update-grub".

Please let us know if either of these changes fixes things for you.

Thanks!

Chase,

No joy on 2.6.34, either with or without the "acpi_sleep=sci_force_enable"
option.

Unfortunately, I'm having trouble installing the backported kernel. Using
the provided link I found my way down to
http://ppa.launchpad.net/kernel-ppa/ppa/ubuntu/pool/main/l/linux-meta-lts-backport-maverick/,
but it seems that there is one dependency I can't satisfy. A couple of the
packages depend on linux-headers-2.6.35-14-generic, but that package isn't
found here. I can't figure out where to get the
linux-headers-2.6.35-14-generic package.

I am trying to install the 2.6.35.14.16 version of the backported kernel.
Help appreciated.

Update: linux-headers-2.6.35-14-generic was one of a few dependencies that I
needed that weren't in the PPA. Thankfully, I did find all of them here:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/2.6.35-14.19/+build/1899998

I am pleased to report that installing the 2.6.35.14.16 backported kernel
resolved the suspend/resume issues for me as well. Thanks to everyone for
the assistance!

Rick - for future reference there is some information in https://launchpad.net/+help/soyuz/ppa-sources-list.html for how to reference a PPA. Installing one of the meta packages, such as linux-image-generic-lts-backport-maverick, will also help by pulling and keeping up to date the correct kernel packages.
