2010-05-09 18:50:16 woawa description After upgrading to Kubuntu 10.04 (from 9.10) I can no longer properly shut down my laptop ONLY after I have used my wireless network interface. Using the ethernet cable (while still having the NetworkManager applet showing the wireless networks) and shutting down the system thereafter works fine. This is Linux jabbok 2.6.32-22-generic #33-Ubuntu SMP Wed Apr 28 13:28:05 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux on a Lenovo Z61p (9452W5P). After muting the grub2 splash screens, I was able to see a kernel error message on the display when the laptop freezes: .... kernel BUG at /build/buildd/linux-2.6.32/fs/fs-writeback.c 157! invalid opcod: 0000 [#1] SMP last sysfs file: /sys/devices/virtual/sound/timer/uevent CPU1 ... Unfortunately, the syslog writing process seems to be no longer active at the point of the crash so that I cannot find any indication in there. [I had to jot down the kernel messages above from the screen and type them in again.] After an unclean shutdown (pressing the power button) all user desktop configurations are lost. (Icons in panel, background image, etc.) Steps to reproduce the kernel panic: - boot the system (after a clean shutdown) - login as user - use knetworkmanager applet to start (known) wireless WPA2 secured network connection [type kwallet password into box opening up] - once connected, shut down system via Leave -> shutdown This will freeze the laptop during shutdown. The same will happen during the shutdown steps if I request a reboot. However, all of this doesn't happen if I connect an ethernet cable for my network connection. The system shuts down properly, even though wirless is enabled in knetworkmanager and my home network is shown in the list of available wireless networks (being inactive though). It used to work fine with Kubuntu 9.10 previously. Thanks for having a look at it. Please let me know if you require additional information for debugging this issue.
