Bug Description

With Dell Latitude D505 running Lucid, the system hangs completely when X.org is supposed to start with 2.6.32-21-generic kernel. With 2.6.32-20-generic it starts up fine. Newer kernel works with recovery console, but trying to start gdm there hangs the same way. When the system has hung, it doesn't react to ctrl-alt-del or caps lock. Shortly before hanging, a low resolution (VGA?) Ubuntu logo is displayed. Then the logo blurs and the screen goes blank.

Hi Maakuth,

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Hi, I can confirm Ubuntu 10.04 is crashing on startup if using Dell Latitude D505. I tried running it on 2 separate D505s machines, and it doesn't start.

These D505s ran Ubuntu 8.10 and 9.04, (and other distros) successfully with no major issues.

I notice this issue also raised by another user on ubuntu-bugs: [Bug 568939] [NEW] Kernel 2.6.32-21.32 fails to boot Dell D505 Laptop beyond splash
Don't know how to hyperlink on this board but here's the webpage address: http://<email address hidden>/msg2219887.html

I posted a separate question about this a few days ago on https://launchpad.net/ubuntu (Question #109033).

Unfortunately I haven't time to spend resolving this, I'm posting this just to confirm that the bug exists. Thanks!
