Can you please try booting with radeon.new_pll=0 added to the kernel command line in grub to see if the issue still exists with that option?

Can you please tell me how to do it? I dont know how to go to grub options.
I pressed "esc" before boot and during boot process, but I can't see grub. (Sorry for my disability.)

I realy would like to help to solve this problem.
I'm using Ubuntu since 4.10, and this is for the first time I have serious trouble.

I have the same bug in my Sony Vaio laptop which has a X2100 chipset. Unfortunately I do not have the laptop at the moment, so will try the boot options once I get home.

Yes! It works. Thank you very much.

I installed Ubuntu using alternate CD an flickering/shaking was still there.
Then I changed grub2 as you suggested and now everything works perfectly.

I did it this way:

1. add "radeon.new_pll=0" after "quiet splash" to the file /etc/default/grub :

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash radeon.new_pll=0"

2. run command: sudo update-grub

3. check if in your /boot/grub/grub.cfg is something like this:
linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-17-generic root=UUID=accec70e-54ff-436b-a1f9-6f0a69411799 ro quiet splash radeon.new_pll=0
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32-17-generic

4. restart
------------
Before this, I tried it with the same good result right in grub2 menu (temporary way):

1. Press SHIFT during boot
2. Press "e" to edit grub2 options
3. Add radeon.new_pll=0 at the end of line "linux /boot/vml.....
4. Press Ctrl+x

I don't know if it is related but in Lucid Lynx I've had a similar issue. My video card is intel however:

$ lspci

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/GME, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation N10/ICH 7 Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02)

What's odd is I can be working along no problems what so ever and then the screen starts to shake. I simple alt-tab to another window and it stops. I think it may be related to other windows trying to get focus but I'm not 100% sure.

Good to hear Linuxfan, thanks for keeping us up to date and we've identified your machine as one that needs a quirk. Moving this bug over to the kernel

Anyone else tagging along in this bug, please file new bugs for your issues using ubuntu-bug xserver-xorg-video-ati (or ubuntu-bug xserver-xorg-video-intel for the person in comment #10) because you do not have the same problem.

It happens to me too.

My Video card is SIS671 and I can't see anythinh durring the boot 'cause the screen shakes a lot.

And after the boot process I just can use the 800x600 resolution because sismedia driver doesn't work anymore.
