Bug Description

ZTE-MF633 3G modem isn't detected Ubuntu 9.10 until I create a file named /etc/modprobe.d/zte-mf633.conf with this content:
options usbserial vendor=0x19d2 product=0x0031

When I add "options usbserial vendor=0x19d2 product=0x0031" then ZTE-MF633 3G modem is detected by Network-Manager but only if modem is plugged-in during Ubuntu startup. If I plug in ZTE-MF633 3G modem when Ubuntu is started, then it doesn't appear in Network-Manager even if file /etc/modprobe.d/zte-mf633.conf exists.

See http://www.opensourcetutor.com/2010/03/07/bigpond-nextg-zte-mf633-modem-with-ubuntu-9-10/ for more info.

Btw, this bug may be related to bug #408555 (ZTE MF636 3G modem cannot used in Karmic) - it seems both modems (MF633 and MF636) has the same USB ID: 19d2:0031

Btw, ZTE-MF633 3G modem works only if PIN code is turned off in SIM card - Ubuntu 9.10 doesn't offer to enter PIN code even if file /etc/modprobe.d/zte-mf633.conf with line "options usbserial vendor=0x19d2 product=0x0031" exist.

I'm attaching the zte-mf633.conf file to this bugreport - it seems I should include this file into baltix-default-settings package for Baltix 9.10 (Karmic)

Ubuntu developers, please tell me if "options usbserial vendor=0x19d2 product=0x0031" setting in /etc/modprobe.d/ can cause any problems in Ubuntu 10.04, because I don't wanna to create problems for our users when they will upgrade Baltix 9.10 to Ubuntu 10.04.

Hi Mantas,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 542902

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Please feel free to open a new bug report if you're still experiencing this on a newer release (Bionic 18.04.3 / Disco 19.04)
Thanks!
