Bug Description

I just tried Lucid beta 1 on my Intel iMac.

First of all, congrats for the great work!

Too bad, I cannot hear anything. I can be a problem of snd_hda_intel model, I had to specify one in order to have a full sound on Karmic.

Let me know how can I help!

This bug effects me to. I would be happy to test but I don't know what or how to do what you mean in comment #2. Could you provide me more detail? Please and thank you :-)

David Henningsson (diwic) wrote :

@Amber: try this terminal command "ubuntu-bug sound" to file a separate bug with proper information. Thank you!

Amber Graner (akgraner) wrote :

@ David I did that - that's how I found out that this is effecting me to. Rather than file a dup of this bug I said "me too" - I don't understand why I need to file a separate bug?

Amber Graner (akgraner) wrote :

@ David correction I used "ubuntu-bug audio" :-)

added bug Bug #546957 :-) Thanks!

David Henningsson (diwic) wrote :

@Amber: Thanks. The subsystems of your codecs don't match (i e you have different hardware), so there is a chance that they are different bugs.

Hi Daniel,

The mb31 model is the one I'm using with Karmic, and works good!

I'm still trying Lucid using the LiveCD, so I cannot try the alternative module.

I'll certainly try it one I'll upgrade!

f3a97 (f3a97) wrote :

Hi Daniel,

I can confirm that mb31 works great!

The only improvement I see is to be able to automatically configure the correct model, in order to avoid this configuration for non advanced users.

We can close the bug now, thanks!

Does capture work, too?

As a newbie, how do you change the model to mb31?

Thanks, Craig

Daniel T Chen (crimsun) wrote :

Sorry for the delay. Patch submitted to stable@ and upstream.

Craig, one way is to add the following line to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf:

options snd-hda-intel model=mbp31

and reboot.

Craig, I meant model=mb31 previously, *not* mbp31.

I've changed the model over as instructed, but still can't get sound from the internal speaker. Line out works fine. Microphone does not.

I added this

to the bottom of

sudo pico /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

# commented out this line options snd-hda-intel model=mbp3
#added this
options snd-hda-intel model=mb31
#finished add

Whole file is attached

ALSA: hda: Use mb31 quirk for an iMac model

    BugLink: https://launchpad.net/bugs/542550

Symptom: On the reporter's iMac, in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS neither playback
    nor capture appear audible out-of-the-box.

Test case: Boot from an Ubuntu 10.04 LTS live cd or from an installed
configuration and attempt to play or capture audio.

Resolution: Specify the mb31 quirk for this machine in the codec SSID

For my iMac 20" with Realtek ALC889A I've added

options snd-hda-intel model=mb31

to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

and works really well.

Thank you :)

SRU Justification

Impact: The upstream process for stable tree updates is quite similar in scope to the Ubuntu SRU process, e.g., each patch has to demonstrably fix a bug, and each patch is vetted by upstream by originating either directly from Linus' tree or in a minimally backported form of that patch.

The upstream stable patch set is now available and contains fixes for this problem. It should be included in the Ubuntu kernel as well.
