Same here, speakers all OK but mic is dead. My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite U405-S2856 and is on Karmic Koala 32-bit.

The odd thing is that the mic (sort of) worked with Ubuntu 9.04, but it broke on upgrade.

Hi rah_b11,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 514834

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

I was also affected by this problem so after hearing about OSS4 working for some people, I used this link: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OpenSound to install it so that I could use skype(skype-static-oss_2.0.0.68+repack-0medibuntu3_i386) This worked and I loved it however after upgrading to ubuntu 10.04 Sound stopped working but instead of reinstalling OSS4, I decided install linux mint on a seperate partition, use OSS4 on there, and run skype there. Today, I was finally able to complete my move back to ALSA on my ubuntu 10.04 using the instructions here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=5539687&postcount=331
and I installed ALSA 1.0.23 on my system. I rebooted and sound was working properly. I installed the latest version of skype from the repo and just for the heck of it made a test call and to my surprise, my mic worked!! I opened sound recorder and tested the sound again using the internal mike by the camera and also a plug in mic and they both worked!
