Bug Description

I frequently get disconnected from wireless connection even though signal strength is excellent. No obvious information in dmesg. Some times the whole system freezes - which is probably related to wireless as it doesn't happen when I am connected wired. The problem is frequent and reproducible. Please let me know any more information is needed (hopefully appreport attached the relevant information).

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it without more information.

Please run the following command which will attach necessary information:

apport-collect 486869

Bear in mind that you may need to install the python-launchpadlib package from the universe repository with 'sudo apt-get install python-launchpadlib'. Additionally, when prompted to give apport-collect permissions for Launchpad you will need to give it at least the ability to "Change Non-Private" data as it will be adding information to your bug report.

If you are using an older release or cannot use apport please at least add the following information (pay attention to lspci's additional options):
First run the following commands:
1) uname -a > uname-a.log
2) dmesg > dmesg.log
3) sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log
4) cat /proc/version_signature > version.log
then attach the files separately to the bug report (not pasted into comments or tar/zip-ed).

For your reference, the full description of procedures for kernel-related bug reports is available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/KernelTeamBugPolicies. Thanks in advance!

I am not sure if it helps, but when I get disconnected, I do sudo /etc/init.d/network-manager restart and it gets connected back. Trying to connect by clicking on the network applet doesnt help so have to restart.

hummerbliss,
have you attempted to test this against the latest kernel? If not, please do so and let me know the result. Also, in the event that it is not resolved with the latest Ubuntu kernel, then please also test the latest upstream kernel. I look forward to the results of your testing.

Hi Jeremy,

Tested with latest Ubuntu kernel (git://kernel.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ubuntu-karmic.git, 891645fa08de3185361ea2382669240143b6659c, 2.6.31-18.56) according to instructions http://blog.avirtualhome.com/2009/11/03/how-to-compile-a-kernel-for-ubuntu-karmic/ and the problem can be reproduced with no obvious info in dmesg.

Regarding testing with upstream kernel - can I just use the config from the running kernel to compile the upstream kernel ? How do I go about compiling the non free modules (broadcom drivers in my case) - any pointer/doc would be helpful.

Hi hummerbliss,

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Hello Jeremy

1. If you have read my previous comments you would see that I did try with upstream kernels with no luck
2. Today I switched to Ubuntu 10.4 RC hoping that it got fixed - NO LUCK.
3. This problem is not just specific to me but atleast two others in our office.

yes. I am facing the same problem starting the last few weeks. It used to work flawlessly until I got some regular updates. After installing the updates, the internet started to keep dropping pretty often and it kinda gets frustrating. I tried using wicd, it gave a much better performance, but seems like wicd doesnt work with unsecured n/w and hence becomes difficult to access internet in public places. I reported this problem in the forums also, people kept suggesting all kind of stuffs but nothing seems to be working.
