I think I might have fixed the problem.  I ran apt-get install --reinstall
linux-image-generic linux-generic and did not get an error.  I ran uname -r
and got this:
jason@jason-laptop-ubuntu:~$ uname -r
2.6.31-19-generic
so I think it may have updated.  maybe that is what caused my graphics
drivers to get disabled the other day when I emailed you last.  I will try
to run an update an see what happends.
