Just upgraded to Karmic from Jaunty. I seem to be experiencing the same problem. I've attached a PNG from bootchart. I wasn't able to reach the desktop, it just stopped on a black screen with no response to keyboard input. Pressing the power button once did cause the machine to shutdown "normally" though. Maybe I just didn't wait long enough.

No problems booting if I add "acpi=off" to GRUB though.
