Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-media

With an Asus Xonar D1 soundcard, volume adjustment is extremely slow, leading to stuttering and sound fallout. Pulse Audio even crashes when playing back a movie with Totem (with other players I get only stuttering for several seconds) and adjusting the sound volume. To be sure I don't have some weird settings I booted from the live CD and had the same problem. Easiest way to see it, is to open the audio preference window and adjust the volume from the applet. The volume in the window reacts with a huge delay.

Please tell me if additional information is required.

affects: gnome-media (Ubuntu) → pulseaudio (Ubuntu)

I added the output when starting gnome-volume-control with the debug option.

this is fixed with the alsa-backports-modules package. however.. pulse audio is still crashing sometimes when adjusting volume with totem

Just wanted to add that the sound volume adjustment is still slow and the problems with totem persist in 9.10. Today I tried 10.04 from live cd and the problems got much worse. Sound playback and sound adjustment leads to bad stuttering and sometimes application crash.

Please reproduce the symptom using linux-alsa-driver-modules-$(uname -r) from ppa:ubuntu-audio-dev

I installed the package (deinstalled alsa-backports-modules) in karmic but there is the same problem with totem. I want to test the lucid package too. When I install in starting from the live cd, is it enough to "alsa force-reload" to load the new modules?

Is this reproducible using linux-alsa-driver-modules from ppa:ubuntu-audio-dev?

Hi LostinSpacetime,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 469344

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

My last experience with this bug was after installing Ubuntu 10.4. It was far worse than on 9.10+alsa-backports-modules. Since I couldn't use my computer that way, I'm using a Creative X-Fi instead, which works perfectly. I will test Ubuntu 10.10 as soon as I have time and report the results.

I have the same issue with Xonar DX, on Ubuntu 10.04 seems if I update the kernel to 2.6.34 the problem goes away.
