Bug Description

Running Karmic (9.10) updated as of 11/1/09.

What I expect to happen: When I close the lid, I expect the light to start pulsing and the computer to go to sleep.

What actually happens: The light doen't pulse. When I open the lid, the computer's screen is black (the backlight is on, but nothing on the display). Alt+REISUB doesn't work, I have to manually cycle the power.

Steps to reproduce:

1. On a Dell Vostro A90, close the lid.
2. Open the lid.

Other notes:

I keep an SD card plugged in at all times (it has my music and other data on it).

This thread discusses the problem and offers two solutions:

1) Remove the SD card.
2) Lock the SD card (slide the "Lock" tab on the SD card down).

Both of these solutions worked for me; however shouldn't this be unnecessary?

I read that this relates to Jaunty where it's limited to a 16GB SD card, possibly when mounted as /home. This killed suspend/resume for me on Jaunty.
As for Karmic, I can suspend or hibernate *once*, but subsequent suspends/hibernates result in taking me to the login screen until I restart

A workaround exists:

open /usr/sbin/pm-suspend ( ie. sudo gedit /usr/sbin/pm-suspend)

add this line to the beginning

umount <where your card is mounted> (ie. umount /media/mySD)

reboot.

The mini will now properly suspend. The only annoying issue is that upon resume, the SD card will mount and a window with its content will show up and take focus.

By the way, the same applies to the Dell Mini 9.

It would be nice to have this very annoying bug fixed in lucid. At the very least the workaround could be added to /usr/sbin/pm-suspend for dell netbooks.
