Bug Description
I tried to install the restricted STA driver for the Broadcom 4312 wireless in my Dell Mini 9 laptop, on a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.10 standard edition. After installing 9.10 I applied all updates with aptitude upgrade, then went to the Restricted Drivers and installed the STA driver for Broadcom/ Then the utility seemed to freeze up, my Gnome bars vanished (wallpaper remained) and the Restricted Drivers utility then lost its theming. It looked like Windows 2000 for a while, until the utility vanished. The system hung. I forced a power off with the power button and got the bug report msg upon login.

On my Mini 9 the symptom is a bit different:
I first enabled the free driver which didn't work (see https:/ /bugs.launchpad .net/ubuntu/ +source/ linux/+ bug/502433).
After a reboot, I tried to enable the STA driver, but the machine crashed while installing. A black screen was shown with the underline cursor blinking in the upper left corner, and a white hairpin mouse cursor remained on the screen. The touchpad and the keyboard didn't work any more, not even Alt-SysRq combinations (tried K, S, U, B).
After power off and bootup the free wifi driver was still in use with the errors described in 502433.
