Bug Description

After upgrading from 9.04 to 9.10 the sound stopped working completely.

aplay -l says 'no sound cards found'

The soundcard is onboard, my mainboard is an ASUS M3N78-EM.

cat /proc/asound/cards on the other hand tells me

" 0 [NVidia ]: HDA-Intel - HDA NVidia
                      HDA NVidia at 0xfce78000 irq 21"

and "head -n 1 /proc/asound/card0/codec*" gives me

"==> /proc/asound/card0/codec#0 <==
Codec: Realtek ALC1200

==> /proc/asound/card0/codec#3 <==
Codec: Generic 10de NVIDIA MCP78 HDMI"

Setting various options in alsa-base.conf like "options 3-stack, model=auto etc. " didn't help.

I'm not using the HDMI output nor the optical one, so I don't know if those would work.

The Sound Applet can't find any hardware either beside the dummy-output.

This is Jaunty's kernel. Please use Karmic's kernel instead if you
plan to use Karmic.

Why didn't it happen on its own during the upgrade?

I remember now. This is probably caused by the bug where the they forgot to include a script that updated grub after one of the last updates during the alpha stage of karmic.

Updating the menu.lst and consequentially upgrading to the new kernel did the trick!
