Bug Description

I am using Ubuntu 9.10(final release) on Dell Vostro 1320. Ubuntu is responding in a very weird manner to the wireless switch toggle.

If I log into Ubuntu with wireless switched off and if I switch on the wireless after logging in, everything works properly. (Except that it shows a crash report. But, still everything works)

If I log into Ubuntu with wireless switched on, it detects wireless as disabled. Then, if I go ahead and switch off the wireless, it thinks wireless has been switched on and starts searching for available wireless connections.(At this point also it shows crash report.) It can list down all the available wireless connections; But, can not connect to any of them.

Hence, to get wireless working, every time, I have to switch off wireless before logging into the system and then, switch it on.

ProblemType: KernelOops
Annotation: Your system might become unstable now and might need to be restarted.

Got the same problem here with my 1320. I reported it with the beta version and hoped it might have been cured for the release - no such luck! There has to be a point during boot up where the system check the status of the switch which means that we poor dell users should be able to change it so it reads the status of the switch in reverse. Perhaps the OS checks the type of machine it is running on and could do that automatically for vostros? Unfortunately I don't know my way around the inside of Ubuntu yet, so any boffins out there got any ideas?

Is bug, you reported, still alive? If it is, can/should we merge these two
bugs?

To install the BIOS upgrade you might need to have a Windows OS installed, the BIOS installers are usually exe's, the other possibility is that there is a non-os based version can be put on a floppy with a program to install them.
