Bug Description

I have a Sony Vaio and my built in webcam doesnt work due to missing driver.
The lsusb information is
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 05ca:183a Ricoh Co., Ltd Visual Communication Camera VGP-VCC7 [R5U870]

Now on some forums people have said that in gutsy kernel it works.

I have tried with jaunty and karmic and it doesnt work. So it is a REGRESSION.

Please this is a somewhat old webcam whose drivers were once there and worked. PLEASE fix this.

Hi!
You can find driver you need here:
http://www.palmix.org/download/r5u870_k2.6.30_i386.tar.bz2

Then, there is this repository:
https://edge.launchpad.net/~intuitivenipple/+archive/ppa
but it yet to be updated to Karmic

thanks for replying. but i am on karmic and as u said the ppa doesnt work here.

If the fix is available so easily do you know why it is not in karmic?

would really be happy if this at the least makes it into lucid.

I will ask the author of the repository to upload the package that I have previously linked; otherwise, I'll upload it myself.
About Lucid, I hope that the author of the driver update it, but I found that interesting developments are being made about the uvcvideo module for the support of our webcams.

Hi!

Is the above PPA repository still valid?
What package should I install to enable this camera to work?

Thanks!

Hi tgpraveen,

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

This is still an issue in the current Ubuntu release (lucid/64 with the latest updates):

As a workaround try this:

       open a terminal

        $ sudo apt-get install libglib2.0-dev libusb-dev build-essential gcc automake mercurial
 $ hg clone http://bitbucket.org/ahixon/r5u87x/
 $ cd r5u87x
 $ make
 $ sudo make install
 $ sudo r5u87x-loader --reload

 The loader will automatically be run on boot when it detects your webcam.
