thinkpad R61 did not come back after hibernation, running from USB stick

Bug Description

I tried to hibernate Karmic RC running on my Thinkpad R61, having booted from a USB stick. When I booted back up, the programs I had open were no longer open and a red error status icon said there was a kernel error that caused hibernation to fail.
