ubuntu karmic beta usb storage devices not recognised automatically

Using an MSI Wind U100 with Ubuntu Karmic (Development Branch), updated to 16 Oct 2009. Problem is that USB storage devices are not recognised. Primary problem is with a Kingston Data Traveller 8GB memory stick, but there is also a failure to mount an LG Slim External Super Multi DVD Rewriter.

I expected the memory stick to power up and offer up my ebooks for hours of reading enjoyment. Instead, nothing happened.
