Thank you, Pauls. The fglrx driver suggested by Ubuntu was the generic: "3D-accelerated proprietary graphics driver for ATI cards." Installing the driver seemed to create more (and more serious) problems than it solved, so I uninstalled it. (I'm not a gamer and probably don't need accelerated graphics.) Here is the result of the command you suggested with no proprietary driver present:
