Bug Description

System freezes at random. Screen blanks out with striped pattern. It does not respond to any command. Hard reboot required. I haven't identified any running application as the culprit. It happens at random. The graphics card is ATI Radeon xpress 1100. Is this a kernel problem or a graphics problem? I have installed the medibuntu package but the problem existed both before and after.

Confirmed here. Also note: Debian 5 does not show this problem. Ubuntu and all Ubuntu-Jaunty-based other distros do.

Hi Everyone,

Can you test with the latest Karmic 9.10 Beta release? It contains a much newer 2.6.31 based kernel. Would be great to know if this will affect the release at the end of this month. Thanks.

I have installed Karmic beta and had the first freeze today. Laptop was just sitting idle, don't know for how long exactly.
Screen was black and no way to wake the laptop up again but to do a hard reboot (turn off-on).

One clue may be that the boot process complains of an unknown BIOS version: Acer Aspire 5100 v1.80...

Will keep testing, but it seems the issue is still there.

Peter,

Thanks a lot. If it is possible, it would be great to then also test the latest upstream mainline kernel available. This will allow additional upstream developers to examine this issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds .
And could you please also post the apport-bug info on your Karmic Beta machine?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I upgraded to Karmic Koala BETA (64-bit version) a couple of days ago and I have been running the system since without any freeze. So I guess I am out of the woods.

Peter: I got the message about the BIOS at first boot, but haven't received it since, and no problems. Are you running the 32-bit or 64-bit version?

(P.s. if you upgrade to Karmic Koala 64-bit you will experience problems with Flash on this machine, but installing the 64-bit adobe flash alpha solved the problem)

happy so far

Bryan,

I would LOVE to help, but please help me get underway. How do I post the apport-bug info? What steps do I need to take?
Will look at the KernelMainlineBuilds page ASAP and let you know how it goes.

BTW I am using the 32-bit version.

Peter,

Great, please run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach kernel debug information to this bug report.

apport-collect -p linux <bug#>

Bryan,

I am very sorry, but the apport-collect process aborts with an error (which I reported). Anything else I can do to help?
