screen text appears before xsplash

Bug Description
Binary package hint: upstart
In karmic on a virtualbox VM, I get the following console text before xsplash starts (see attached).
As an aside, it does take quite a few seconds for the text to appear, so it initially appears as if karmic has crashed on boot. I'm not sure that this is an 'enhanced' boot experience as described in the beta notes.
