Bug Description

Karmic reliably hangs my powerbook G4 when I shutdown/restart the machine (there is no crash report in /var/crash). It happens right after X goes away and I see a login prompt on the terminal-like screen. There is then a core dump on the screen and the machine is entirely frozen - 100% reproduceable. Let me know how I can provide more/better info.

After today's update to 2.6.31-11, the system still freezes on shutdown (without anything in /var/crash).

It is the b43 module which causes the problem. I can prevent it by not installing the b43-fwcutter. Of course I cannot use my wifi.

Yes, I have filed a separate bug some time ago about b43, ie 450159 at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/450159. This bug should probably be marked as a duplicate of 450159. I still want to know how to fix this, since b43 used to work well on earlier versions of ubuntu.

There is a newer kernel out that fixed my ibook g4 experiencing the same halting shutdown problem. it is here: http://people.canonical.com/~smb/bug476154/

@rishi: you can avoid the hang by unloading the b43 module (or b43legacy in my case) before shutting down. You unload it with 'modprobe -r b43(legacy)'

There is now a new kernel in http://people.canonical.com/~smb/bug476154/ and this new kernel (ie linux-image-2.6.31-16-powerpc_2.6.31-16.51+bug476154v1_powerpc.deb) solves this bug. See bug 476154 and bug 450159 for more discussion.
