Bug Description

The generic ubuntu kernels have the timer frequency set to 250hz.

The recommended value for desktop systems, as given in the kernel config documentation ( http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/next/linux-next.git;a=blob;f=kernel/Kconfig.hz ), is 1000 hz.

Could this setting be increased to 1000?

We discussed this in the forums. I'm QBeta there. I was trying to use Rosegarden but it won't work with a 250HZ timer, needs 1000HZ. I tried using linux-rt but there is some issue with my Nvidia graphics card and it won't work. Not everyone can just switch to linux-rt though that is the obvious solution for multimedia intensive work.

Hi raboof,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 433505

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Lucid Beta2 has still 100HZ set on 64bit kernels. I agree with raboof to set it to 1000HZ for desktop systems as default.
And i suggest also setting CONFIG_PREEMPT=Y for the default standard kernel

It's default for a reason..

Stumbled over this as well : http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-791305-highlight-1000.html
Of course that's a best case scenario, but still.

Oh, you know they wont change it... for these reasons I dump Ubuntu.

The kernel is configured in a very bad way generally.

As of this situation, I bet all other desktop distros set it to 1000hz.

Can some Ubuntu kernel maintainer explain why the timer frequency is too low (100hz) in the 64-bit generic kernel?

@Marcos,

Because raise that value means 1) increase power consumption 2) reduce throughput.

Ubuntu Kernel Team try to provide the most wide, common and useful configurations but it is very difficult satisfy so many users and every corner cases.

If you need of 1000 Hz kernel you could help revamping -rt, -preempt or -lowlatency kernels.
