Could you check whether it is really the automount part that fails for you or possibly "only" the nautilus window opening as a result of that? If you insert your usb key and wait a while, do you get a directory in /media which is either named disk or have the name of the volume label of the usb keys partitions? This is what I see here: the mount is done ok but opening the nautilus window seems rather unreliable.

I have had this problem on a System 76 Pangolin Performance since beta, in both gnome and KDE

I have this problem. Nothing happens when plugging in any kind of USB drive. Nothing in /media or anywhere. If I type dmesg, it says a USB storage device was attached, but that's it. On Acer Aspire 5515.

Also, I can get stuff to mount in this way

sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt

I have the same problem with an Acer Extensa 5220, on Ubuntu 10.04
Plugging-in an external stick :
"~$ dmesg
    ....
[ 248.916064] usb 2-1: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 2
[ 249.051384] usb 2-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice"

So, the external drive is recognized, but nothing were mounted.

Sometimes work the following commands (but not always):
"sudo stop udev
sudo start udev"
and reinstalling udev does not solve the problem.

As suggested by Jeremy Foshee, I'm going to mark as new this bug.
