Same here on Acer Travelmate 8100. It seems like this module get loaded on all kind of Acer hardware which has nothing to do with Acer Aspire One. Either it should not have been loaded here, or the message should be toned down a bit.

I agree the module should test for the Acer Aspire One and only load on such hardware.

From the module aliases in the kernel module, I think it gets loaded for all Acer/Gateway/Packard Bell machines:

MODULE_ALIAS("dmi:*:*Acer*:*:");
MODULE_ALIAS("dmi:*:*Gateway*:*:");
MODULE_ALIAS("dmi:*:*Packard Bell*:*:");

Until this is fixed upstream, I suggest just lowering the severity of the warning so that it does not show on a normal "quiet" boot. It can be tempting to rephrase it, especially the over-dramatic "aborting" part, but I think it is best to leave the text as it is upstream.

Similar error here on Acer Aspire 4710, but boots into the laptop alright. Just shows these warning signs and says something like could affect performance and then boots into Kubuntu 9.10 alpha 6 with all the latest updates.

Just to make that clear, these messages are totally harmless. (Unless you have an Acer One and want to control the fan.)

Beyond "totally harmless" - the fan actually seems to be functioning better, now.

Neil Wilson (neil-aldur) wrote : Re: [Bug 432049] Re: acerhdf - unknown (unsupported) BIOS version

What's worse is that if you *do* have an Acer Aspire One, this module
doesn't automatically activate the enhanced fan functionality. You
have to do it by hand!

It would be nice to add the appropriate value into the sysctl system.
If the module is active, we should at least try to use it on the right
hardware.

I have an Acer Aspire 3003NLMi and I get the same error in dmesg. However, in Karmic the control of the fan is problematic. Quite often the fan fails to start up and remains off even when the temperature goes up above 80 degrees C! It has not been a rare occurrence for my laptop to power off because of over heating (at 97 degrees C).

My main installation is Linux Mint 6 Fluxbox CE which is based on Intrepid... and I have no such problems with fan control there. I have started another thread but it seems this one is more active.

It is a real bummer to constantly keep an eye on CPU temps and throttle down manually when temps get too high.

Anyone know a kernel that works? I had a 2.6.30 that worked perfect on Ubuntu 9.04, but that kernel doesnt work with 9.10.. Sound and touchpad fail to work with it. The brightness is so bright its causing major headaches :( - Thanks!
