Bug Description

Error occurs at Karmic Koala Alpha5:

Everything's working fine, when using the WEP-Encryption.

But when using a WPA-Encryption, the device looses connection after about 10-15 seconds. In that short time I'm able to use the Internet...

Same issue here, connecting with my laptop resets the AP, a D-Link Airplus G 2.4GHz wgl-g700ap thereby disconnecting all other devices.

My NIC is a:
01:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG [Golan] Network Connection (rev 02)

The other computer (running Jaunty) has a:
03:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 4965AG or AGN [Kedron] Network Connection (rev 61)

We tried installing Karmic on the second computer a while ago, but switched back to Jaunty when the network issue occured. My laptop (the one with Karmic) works as expected with WPA2 at home, but not here.

I have a tcpdump -vvv -i wlan0 -w to send to anyone interested. Anything else that would be useful?

The same problem here:
wlan0: AP denied association (code=12)

AP resets its wlan interface (but uptime on AP does not reset) so every other client connected to it gets disconnected too (repeats about every 2 minutes).

HW specs:
Intel WLAN 5100 card
Airlive 5460AP and 5470AP

Disabling network-manager and connecting manually with wpa_suplicant works.

connection appears to be stable when using wpa2 aes.
flakey when using wpa2 tkip settings in the access point.

so would appear corrent work around for me would be to select aes in access point.

Hi there,

I can confirm that workaround. WPA2 AES works fine.
TKIP does not, allthough it did before with Hardy Heron.

I can't use that workaround: my router doesn't support AES... what can I do? I would be glad if the problem was solved since I cannot find any other solution a part from re-installing 9.04 !!! For me it's a major issue since that PC must be connected 24x7

aptitude install wicd

It's not a driver problematic. It's a Network Manager that doesn't work. I have this intel wifi card and Network Manager on 9.10 doesn't work with WPA Wifi (though it used to work on previous versions of Ubuntu). And I forced to use Wicd, because once I replaced Network Manager with Wicd I have not issues with Wifi at all.

I had the same problem on a Toshiba A300. No problem with 8.10, virtually no wireless with 9.10
looking at /var/log/daemon.log I realized that NetworkManager was logging the disconnection immediately after an error by wpa_supplicant.
In the same log on 8.10 there was no sign of wpa_supplicant (which I don't even think I had installed). Apparently they do not behave well together and they both get installed by default. The problem must also be related to the network card because on a second toshiba laptop I had no trouble at all.
I first thought about removing wpa_supplicant but this will remove also NetworkManager so I did the opposite and removed only NetworkManager. I configured the wpa_supplicant (there are various guides on how-to around the net) and the wirelss started working fine. I lost the nm-applet but I found a nice application which will do something similar called wpa_gui. It does only configure wireless connections but this is fine for me.

I have the same problem on my Dell XPS 1530 with Intel 3945 LAN.

This seems to be a problem with latest kernels and i hope it gets fixed soon.

I have tried fresh installs from Ubuntu 9.10, Mandriva 2010, openSuse 11.2, Fedora 12. All of the distributions have it in their fresh installs.

I only recently decided to do a fresh install, before that i had Ubuntu 8.10 upgraded to 9.04 and to 9.10. I have never noticed this problem before. It started appearing in the fresh install of 9.10.

Can you grab the output of 'dmesg'? There should be a number of items related
to 'iwl3945' or 'iwlagn' in there that could help. Also, some additional
debugging tips are here:

http://live.gnome.org/NetworkManager/Debugging

in the "Debugging WiFi Connections" section; the supplicant log can be very
useful in determining the problem. The log bits linked in that Launchpad bug
aren't quite enough to determine the issue.

Unfortunately this appears to be a driver error. It simply isn't able to
connect to the AP using the settings you've given it. The logs show a lot of
half-completed connections that then fail because the driver sends the
"disconnect" event. I think at this point you shoudl file a bug in your
distributions' bugzilla against the kernel with these logs and follow it up
there. They'll likely ask you to enable debug logging of the driver so that
they can see why the driver is failing to connect to the AP.

Same problem here on 10.04 LTS with this wifi chip. Used to work flawlessly on 9.10... Am not moving to 10.10 until this is sorted out.

I'm not sure whether it is a driver problem or a network manager problem, however when I run :

sudo restart network-manager

Suddenly I can connect again. Usually the connection lasts for ~1hour, sometimes longer... It seems to be depending on the quantity of data transmitted. If I am into heavy downloading sessions, it stops in a shorter timeframe.

To be adding more info: sometimes "restart network-manager" does not work and I need to unload/reload the two kernel modules iwl3945 and iwlcore so that I can get a connection again.

It seems to be most prone to crash when the signal strength is < 60% and when there are many outgoing connections at the same time, e.g. bittorrent traffic or internet surfing. It's actually (almost) stable when there are few connections, such as a single download by wget. I suppose that could lead to testing of some sort...
