Bug Description

When I disconnect the ethernet cable from my hp mini 1020LA I almost certainly get a kernel panic. I'm now running a fresh install of xubuntu 9.04 jaunty, but the same thing happens also in ubuntu 9.04 jaunty and possibly also intrepid. This doesn't seem to affect desktop PCs. Don't know about other laptops.

Thank you for the report.

Could you please provide more details regarding the kernel panic? Are there any messages? On screen? In system log (/var/log/messages).

Can you post it here?

This will allow better analysis of the problem.

Thank you.

No, no messages at all. Just the blinking caps lock light. I checked /var/log/messages, there's nothing of interest:
---
Aug 15 19:57:29 studdark kernel: [ 26.633626] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_CHANGE): eth0: link becomes ready
Aug 15 20:17:19 studdark -- MARK --
Aug 15 20:19:20 studdark syslogd 1.5.0#5ubuntu3: restart.
---

What other info could I try to retrieve that could be useful?

What I do to avoid the kernel panic on ethernet disconnect is: right click on network manager applet -> uncheck "Enable Networking" -> disconnect cable.

I just realised that the bug only happens when unplugging the power cable after unplugging the ethernet cable.
Also tested and still happening with Karmic Alpha 4

This annoying issue re-appeared on 11.04. When you unplug the power cable the OS just crash. If you are on batteries and you plug back in power it crash as well.

Hardware: Dell Inspiron Duo, 64bit; tested on two different machines.

As Lucid Lynx is not friendly with this hardware (touch screen, touch pad and audio issues) makes no sense to have it on these machines.

With limited time as I now have, I've tried to narrow down the cause of the kernel panic, and it seems connected to Gnome and its power profile' settings, as everything works as expected before the user logs in.

As a side note Linux Mint also suffered the same fate.

It would be great if somebody here help me to debug this, as now I am deep in lots of undone work and no much time is left for learning all the basics for a successful debugging.

I'm seeing the same with our Dell Inspiron Duo, 64bit on 11.04
Kernel panic when we plug in the power.

Havent had the chance to look into it any further though
But its Annoying ;)

The kernel panic happens both before and after logging into Gnome, contrary to the earlier report.

I can reproduce it fairly consequently though I did have a string of successful plugging / unpluggings without rebooting earlier. Can't figure out why though :/
The panics restarted after a full shutdown and boot, sadly.

I also am getting a consistent kernel panic when plugging / unplugging the power.
I have a Dell Inspiron Duo, running 64bit Ubuntu 11.10 3.0.0-22-generic.

I can reproduce without logging in. From some searching I tried to disable pm-utils scripts by
creating empty files in /etc/pm/power.d/, but still results in kernel panic.

Nothing looks interesting in /var/log/. Attached screen shot of kernel panic.
What can I do to help debug what is going on?
