Bug Description
Binary package hint: linux-image-
I've just installed Ubuntu 9.04 Desktop Edition for AMD64 architecture
on the following hardware:
MB: EliteGroup RS485M-M
Processor: AMD Sempron 3200+
RAM: 1 GB
VGA: on-board ATI Radeon Xpress 1150
$ uname -a
Linux mypc 2.6.28-14-generic #47-Ubuntu SMP Sat Jul 25 01:19:55 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux
At every system reboot or shutdown a kernel bug trace is displayed and
the system halts.
The /var/log/kern.log is in the attachment.
Is there a way to fix this?

I just confirmed that the kernel bug and crash on shutdown disappeared after turning off UMA memory (option "UMA+SidePort").
Specifically, I set the BIOS option for "Video Graphic Mode" to "SidePort", and the bug did not occur.
I am using BIOS version F.1C, the newest version available from HP.

Hi Robert,
This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://
If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications-
apport-collect -p linux 407652
Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https:/
Thanks in advance.
[This is an automated message. Apologies if it has reached you inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

Hi, Jeremy!
I'm afraid I can't try a new Ubuntu install as in the meantime I installed Debian GNU/Linux 5.0.2 on the machine and put it into production.
With Debian I haven't experienced the issue in all the Linux upgrades from
2.6.26-2-amd64 #1 SMP Sun Jul 26 20:35:48 UTC 2009 x86_64
until
2.6.26-2-amd64 #1 SMP Tue Mar 9 22:29:32 UTC 2010 x86_64

Hi, I have the same problem since i reinstalled ubuntu 9.04 (64-bit). When i shut down or reboot my laptop (HP pavilion zv6150ea) the screen goes black with a part of a log written i believe. And to shut it down completely i have to press the power button. I also noticed that if i put the laptop on "standby" and then use it again, when i shut it down it shut down completely without me to press "power". I have the following hardware:
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3200+ (2ghz)
ATI Radeon XPRESS 200M 5955
2go of RAM with 128mo shared with the video card
Anyway, i joined a part between 2 "shut downs" of the kernel.log.0.
