headphone jack no longer works on install of ubuntu 9.04 on Asus s62e

I have:

Asus S62E

Also troubleshooting script says I'm using snd_hda_intel with:

Previously, headphone and speakers worked fine. Upon installing 9.04, speakers work but when headphone inserted, no sound out of speakers or headphone. Sound level settings are all on/high.

I don't understand why, but this solves it:

*open volume control
*open preferences
*tick surround channel
*close preferences
*unmute surround channel

(I've marked this bug as invalid now, but there's still a bug, since the existing default behaviour was wrong and the solution not at all obvious from the way things are named).
