Is the real problem here that you're unable to use the usual methods to burn a disk ?
brasero informs me it doesn't see any disks it can write to but i just ran "cdrecord /home/kit/Desktop/karmic-desktop-amd64.iso /dev/sr0" from a console which appears to have succeeded.

if this is what the op experienced please add this bug to brasero. if not, ignore this comment.
