I've gone back to open source drivers.

Note that the radeonhd drivers worked *very* poorly with Lucid. This turns out to be a problem mostly because I installed them manually previously. I removed them, rebooted, and now everything looks pretty and updates quickly.

I know Canonical can't control closed source drivers, but at least their hardware drivers thingy could have some sort of black list of known back mixes, right?
