See above thread for information.

================================

1. Turn Off Machine
2. Put USB Pen/Thumb/Flash Drive Into USB Slot
3. Turn On Machine
4. Log-In To Ubuntu

Ubuntu will not show the drive in /media, /mnt, on the desktop, in pysdm or in fdisk -l.

Taking out the Pen/Flash/Thumb drive then putting it back in while logged in makes the drive mountable (and indeed, it auto-mounts itself when replugged) with no issues whatsoever.

I have exactly the same. After booting my external drive with two partitions (ext3 and fat32) is not mounted. After replugging the usb cable mounting is fine.

fdisk -l
   Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdg1 93 120964 970904340 83 Linux
/dev/sdg2 120965 121601 5116702+ b W95 FAT32

In intrepid it was working fine.

One more thing, if you haven't noticed yet. Each time you use pysdm to make it so the drive "auto" mounts, on the next start-up the drive still does not auto-mount (as described in the thread.) But what's even more, is that after doing this, replugging the device after boot in an ubuntu login session causes the USB/external drive to boot up as a different letter than last time.

This may happen every time the device is replugged though even without pysdm.

No, nevermind, that problem was because the Media Readers were mounted before the drive.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please answer these questions:

 * Is this reproducible?
 * If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug?

 This will help us to find and resolve the problem.

the disk not being listed in fdisk indicates that's not a GNOME specific issue

I see, well here's a little more info from the mount command. After mounting, the USB Device shows as follows under mount:

/dev/sdb1 on /media/disk type vfat (rw,nosuid,nodev,uhelper=hal,shortname=mixed,uid=999,utf8,umask=077,flush)

After replugging of course.

Fix:

Add usb_storage to /etc/modules

That worked for me too.

Thanks.

That does not fix it for me - usb is still coming on-line too late for mounting file systems.

I'm having a similar issue.

Ever since upgrading to Jaunty from Intrepid, my external encrypted drive does not automount anymore when I turn it on.

In Intrepid, all I needed to do was to turn it on and it would ask me for a password.

I tried adding the "usb_storage" to etc/modules and restarting, but nothing happens.

Possible Solution:
I also was unable to have my external usb drive auto-mount after reboot in 9.04 after a package update. The problem started after doing on of Juanty's updates, so I looked at the log of what packages were updated. I suspected it might have something to do with HAL so forced downgrade of "hal, libhal1, and libhal-storage1" and after a reboot it worked! My drive was auto-mouting as expected once again. Can anyone else verify?

The bug report says Fix Released, however I still have this problem.

My external hard drive is still not auto-mounting. Am I missing something?
