Bug Description

There is one problem in Jaunty for me: When clicking on suspend to RAM the screen gets black but before the laptop suspends there is a really loud noise from the speakers which sounds like cracking or something like that. Perhaps the sound should be muted before suspending or something like that? Apart from that suspend really works fine.

I have a Dell Latitude E6400 with the current Ubuntu Jaunty. Soundcard is this one:

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)

Same here, Dell Latitude E6500. In addition, there are crackling noises during playback with GStreamer/Pulseaudio.

In fact I have this problem, too. Especially when the music is a little louder. Thought this depended on the quality of the files but you have the same problem it seems to be a problem of Jaunty. Apart from that the speakers are really great, that's definitely not the problem.

The crackling noises seem to be a Pulseaudio feature, they go away when using plain ALSA output. (This is bug #301755.)

Let's keep this bug focussed on the crack at suspend time.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner.
There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test the current Ubuntu development version (10.10). If you can test it, and it is still an issue, we would appreciate if you could upload updated logs by running apport-collect <bug #>, and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.
