Mine also has the same shutdown problem. When I click on the Shutdown button all seems to proceed normally until the final Ubuntu splash screen. At this point I see a black screen with the prompt and the machine does not shut down until I press any key. Then it shutdown. I believe that this is a bug in Ubuntu 9.04. I try to figure out how to fix it but I still can't find the solution. My laptop is Acer 4520G with amd64 but run Ubuntu 9.04 (i386)

Just want to try and keep this report up to date. Care to test and confirm this remains with the latest Karmic 9.10 release? ISO CD images can be found at http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/ . You should be able to test using a LiveCD. Thanks.

I have also aspire 5520. If I press / choose shutdown, and after press Ctrl+F7, usually the last message on screen is
"halt: Unable to iterate IDE devices: No such files or directory". That means that problem is bug 298402 ( https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/298402 ).

Ubuntu waits any key press from me to power off notebook completely. I think
shutdown is ok because hard disks powers off( only motherboard cooler is
working).Notebook is Acer Aspire 7520G. Earlier it worked ok (with all version Ubuntu including Lucid) with the same
configuration. All generic Ubuntu kernels are ok, preempt kernels are wrong
beginning from 2.6.32-23. I tried 2.6.35.4 and .5 kernels and they are both
wrong for me. I have also Winxp x64 installed and it is ok. There are no any
wrong message in system log. ACPI is working ok. The system hangs and waits the
key press after halt -f -p -i -d command started.
