Could you try removing pulseaudio and retesting? There are some similar bugs that this helped with.

@TechnoCat - it did for me too, but there is a lot of cracking noise when I record. You can't use Skype with that solution.

Solution:
Install the latest Alsa Driver from #12 (^above) - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NC10#Audio%20-%20Alsa%20Driver
(it was 1.0.21 when I did this)
AND
EITHER: Install everything that comes up when you search for pulseaudio in Add/Remove Programs when "All available applications" is selected (Qmmp is not necessary, actually, but wouldn't hurt)
OR: sudo aptitude install padevchooser paprefs paman pavumeter pavucontrol (not how I did it, but that should do the trick)

then launch Applications - Sound and Video - Pulse Audio Device Chooser
Make sure Default is selected for Server, Sink and Source
Then Click Configure Local Sound Server (still from Device Chooser drop-down menu from the notification area)

Select everything under Network Access (don't require authentication is optional)
Select enable Multicast/RTP receiver and Sender and Create separate audio device for Multicast/RTP
Under the Simultaneous Output tab, select "add virtual output device for simultaneous output on all local sound cards"

Click Volume Meter (Recording) from the Device Chooser drop-down
and see if it moves when you talk into the mic.

If not working yet, make sure everything is turned up in alsamixer
And, under System - Preferences - Sound make sure either Default or Pulseaudio is selected for everything. Try either.
Make sure microphone volume is turned up in Volume Control for all possible devices (Alsa, OSS and Pulseaudio, and the various other hardware options)

That's how I did it for my friends new NC10. He has left with Sound Recorder and Skype fully functional. I don't think I forgot anything... I would be happy to check any settings on his machine when possible if there are any problems with my instructions. Please post how it worked for you if it works, or doesn't.

Manoj lyer, have you mucked with the pulseaudio settings? I am pretty sure this issue is related to pulseaudio and not to anything else. My solution above worked just fine for me with Jaunty. I'll bet you might not even have to upgrade alsa in Karmic. Sure, perhaps pulseaudio should be configured differently automatically, but if it can be reconfigured to make things work then it's worth it...

Just got sound recorder working on my NC10 running current kernel (2.6.28-15-generic), without recompiling alsa nor messing with pulseaudio config as suggested in #15.
My goal was to make audio conferences with skype, but pulseaudio recording failed (loud white noise). It turned out alsamixer default settings were wrong.

Here is what i'd recommend:
  - get into a shell and launch "alsamixer"
  - hit F4 to switch to Capture settings
  - Hit right arrow until you get to "Input Source"
  - select "Front Mic" (up and down arrows)
You also might want to lower the Mic Boost, Capture and Front Mic levels which are too high untill you get a good sound.

Just my $0.02. Hope this helps...

o.cornu this worked for me on a Samsung R519 with Jaunty fully updated, it's important to select "Front Mic" on "Capture settings".

Manoj, do you still experience this problem with Karmic release?

Hi, I just followed o.cornu's instructions for alsamixer in Karmic on an NC10 and I confirm that it does the job for me.

After tabbing, alsamixer shows 'Capture', that I set to 77, 'Ext Mic' that I set to 67, 'Input So' that should be set to 'Internal Mic' and 'Int Mic' that I also set to 67. I tested this with Skype and Sound recorder and both work fine with these settings!

I did not test using an external mic, but in that case 'Auto Select Mic' may be the right option.

For what it's worth, I tested on NC10 with Karmic UNR, Skype and Sound recorder, with an external mic and the 'Auto Select Mic' as Input Source does the job, both with an external mic and the internal one.
