Hi ar,

Can you comment how often this oops appears? Are there any specific steps you are able to use to trigger this? Did this just recently start appearing (ie is this a regression)? If so, what was the version of the most recent kernel which did not have this oops? Please let us know. Thanks.

Hi Leann,

it is happening quite often. Sometimes 2 or 3 times a day. I just
crashed a minute ago. This time no oops was send.

I have tried to isolate the problem. At first I thought wine was the
cause. But it is not. Second guess is Firefox. But I can not find a
starting point. So I am lost.

It started after the .9 kernel updates.

There are two starting points:
1. Hard crash. Everything locks-up within a second.
2. Loss of control of one application at random. Other programs minimise/maximise, but with 1 minute the system dies.

The problem can be recreated by running a Windows application Newsrover 11.2 in Wine.
Download a newsgroup en watch Linux dying within 10 minutes. The Cpu goes to 50% (=100%), applications become unresponsive, but the screen applets come up. E.g. I can select restart, but noting happens. Then the proces applet with cpu information stops and within 30 seconds the mouse stops working. A hard reboot is the only option.

Should I install Wine 1.19?

Output from top command before crashing:
case 1:
user command cpu
postfix master 100%

case 2
root hald-runner 100%

Both processes did not show up in the applet system monitor. Strange, why are they hidden and using 100% cpu?

New crash direct after starting wine.

Two observations:
1. Numlock indicator started blinking
2. System monitor applet disappeared from screen before the crash

New crash, nothing special.

100% cpu use, windows will not close, restart hangs.

I confirm.
I've got the same error when compilng some program and tried to run firefox.
System: dell xps m1530
kernel: Linux michallo-laptop 2.6.28-11-generic #42 SMP Fri May 22 10:27:26 CEST 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux
distro: kubuntu 9.10 alpha 2 with kernel 2.6.28 recompiled and downgraded.

I think I also saw the same with Virtualbox + openoffice running.

Hi Guys,

Can you test and confirm this issue exists with the latest development Karmic Alpha 9.10 release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great (currently 2.6.31-rc3). It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.
