Thanks in advance

older Pent. II
BIOS old phoenix
CTI manuf. (OEM)
Ubuntu 9.04 BETA - END of MARCH 2009 release

Prior version 9.04 FEB 2009 runs fine.

I tried to install and also to run the newest 9.04RC Ubuntu version today.
I can not run it live at all. The last version to install and run was 9.04 Alpha 5.
The error message is:
* preparing restricted drivers...
* Starting kernal event manager... [ok]
* loading hardware drivers ...
udevdevent2487]: '/lib/udev/pcmcia-socket-startup'
abnormal exit
segmentation fault
(hangs)
---
The live version gets the ubuntu splash/logon screen and hangs during the horz. red bar at approx. 10 percent.
same as since 9.04 Beta and on...

Hi Javaman,

Are you able to run the LiveCD without any issues? It would also be good if you took a peek at the following and attached the relevant debug files - https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingUbiquity/AttachingLogs . Thanks.

I will try (I have run older live CD, not the current 9.04 ones.

I could not get a file off the machine. I crashed or stopped during the
installation process.
I have an older distro (Feb. Ubuntu 9.04 Alpha 5?) on the machine as a
backup. It works fine...

I have the exact same problem with 9.04 on a PIII laptop. 8.10 installs and runs fine, however 9.04 does not work.

I was able to fully install 9.04 on my first try, however it would not boot, system failed on segmentation fault. After that it would not re-install or boot. I checked the MD5 sum of the iso image and tried burning to a new cd and got the same result.

I did a disk check and a memory test on the system and both passed with no errors.

Yes, mine is a PIII. I have been running Xubuntu 8.10 on the machine with no problems.

After I was unable to boot from a clean install of 9.04, I did a clean install of 8.10 and then upgraded to 9.04. The upgrade went fine until the reboot when the exact same problem occurred (identical to what you have described).

Today I was able to boot into the machine by selecting the Linux kernel 2.6.27-7 at boot. The problem, then, appears to lie with the kernel.

Interestingly, however, after doing the clean install of 9.04 and selecting ext4 as the filesystem, I was not even able to perform another clean install of 9.04.

So, my workaround for this is currently as follows (worked on my system with Xubuntu):

1. Do a clean install of 8.10.
2. Upgrade to 9.04 using Synaptic. I did not perform any other updates, just went straight for the upgrade.
3. On boot, follow the prompts to hit the escape key and get the boot menu (my machine gives me two seconds to do this).
4. Select kernel 2.6.27-7. Machine boots up, System Monitor shows Ubuntu Release 9.04 (jaunty), Kernel Linux 2.6.27-7-generic, and GNOME 2.26.1.

Did you ever install 9.04 Alpha 5 or 9.04 Alpha 6?
These were available in Feb. from Ubuntu on the road to 9.04 RC, etc.
I have no problems with the basic 9.04 Alpha 5.... version (do not try to
update to current)

Greg-

I have never run any Alpha releases on the computer in question.

Alpha 5 includes the 2.6.28-8.26 kernel based on 2.6.28.7.
Alpha 6 includes the 2.6.28-8.26 kernel based on 2.6.28.7.
Ubuntu 9.04 Beta includes the 2.6.28-11.37 kernel based on 2.6.28.8.

As my post above shows, one major change to the Beta over Alpha 6 was moving to a new kernel version (with Beta being where Greg started having problems).

Latest and greatest: installed Puppy Linux on the old laptop at some point in the past, worked fine. Put it in the closet and forgot about it. Pulled it out today and ran Xubuntu 9.10 RC from the cd, then chose the install option.

Every thing worked fine. Install went fine, no problems, system boots up no problem.

However, Ubuntu would not install... ends up sitting with the cursor icon spinning. Won't run in live mode either.
