It's pointless to continue with this thread, since no one at Ubuntu cares. Do yourself a favour, get rid of the network-manager applet and install something else. I installed wicd long ago; the interface is not as nice, but at least wireless works as expected.
Long ago I traced the problem to the network-manager applet, even on another Linux installation (gentoo).
