Bug Description

Binary package hint: smbfs

Symptoms:
My system has been freezing frequently the last few days, requiring hard reset each time. There is no apparent pattern to what I am doing when the freeze occurs; it has even happened while I am away from my desk. kern.log shows a recurring bug (about every 10 minutes) in cifs (cifs_dfs_ref.c:274).

System:
Ubuntu 8.10, all packages up to date.

Diagnostics:
Unmounting cifs mounts did not fix the problem. Reinstalling all samba-related packages did not fix the problem. Uninstalling all samba-related packages appears to have fixed it; it hasn't recurred for ~30 minutes now. Excerpts from ker.log are attached.

The error in your logs looks a lot like http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12192
However this doesn't really crash the kernel ?
Did you reproduce it ever since ? Does it reappear if you reinstall samba stuff or use CIFS mounts ?
