Bug Description

Dear Ubuntu Developers!

I using the current Jaunty Alpha4 dayly live cd.

Now the RTL8198 USB wify controller is natively supported, but the
hardware switch is not working my notebook.
If the wify is switched on or off, the wireless networking is enabled
independent the switch state (on or off).

Possible solving this problem?

Lsusb output:
Lsusb says this information:
Bus 007 Device 002: ID 0bda:8198 Realtek Semiconductor Corp.

Now, if the hardware switch is on or off, I using the wlan connections correct.
This is a kernel bug? What the right package?

I have the same problem with my Toshiba Satellite notebook.

The surprising fact: If I remember correctly, with older releases of ubuntu the USB WLAN device dis- and reappeared on the lsusb list when switching on and off even if there was no driver and the device was completely unsupported. I always believed that the switch at the notebook's front was a hardware switch taking the device away from the USB.

Should be fixed. With hardy and intrepid I used a self compiled driver which dealed with the switch correctly, so it should not be a big deal to get a fix for that problem.

My Toshiba Notebook type is satelite l300-144, and have an Rtl8198 Usb
wify controller.
What your Toshiba notebook type and what type your wlan card?

it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try
with the latest Karmic 9.10 release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are

If the issue remains, could you run the following command from a
Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal) while running Karmic. It
will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this

Thank you the information.
Tomorrow I look the actual cd.
If the issue is present, I ran apport-collect -p linux 332795 command.
Your linked url, I see only live dvd's. This dvd's contains upgrades,
or this is an official Karmic live dvd only but not containing upgrades?
If the dvd not containing upgrades, I enough to downloading Karmic live

This is smallest download size.

Attila,

Thanks for your apport.

I'm not sure about your issue. Is Wifi always on after restart/resume or hotkeys not working?

If first case, please, take a look to this bug #324236, and come back with your comments.

I'd like you to test with 2.6.32 kernel (karmic). Please, found it here http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.32/

Thanks a lot for your help!

The problem is following:
Wify is always on, independent the hardware switch toggle state (on/off).
For example, if I switch hardware switch is off, the Network-manager
shows wireless networking is enabled, and if my machine founds wlan
hotspots, I connecting not problem. :-):-)

I looking 2.6.32 kernel tomorrow.

I tested the your suggested kernel version, because possible urgent, and
not would like rest you.
The change is following:
Lossed the network-manager wireless enable/disable setting.
If I right click the network manager panel icon, I see only auto eth0
menu item, connection information menu item, and edit connections menu item.
ifconfig wlan0 shows the hardware information, independent the hardware
switch toggle.

I tryed following tests:
1. Launched the machine with turned on hardware switch, not help,
impossible choose enable/disable the wan controller with Networkmanager.
2. I launch my machine with turned off wlan controller switch, and after
the boot is completed, turned on the hardware switch. Nothing changed,
impossible enable/disable the hardware switch.

The ideal method is following, with possible this is not work my machine:
When the switch is turned on, need automatical loading the need wireless
card module (I think rtl8187 but I am not sure what the correct module
name my card with this kernel version).
If the switch is turned off, need remove the module (for example rtl8187).
For example, my Jaunty system I always remove manual the rtl8187 module
if I switched off the hardware switch with sudo rmmod rtl8187 command.
But if I turn on the switch, need manual loading again the rtl8187
module with sudo modprobe rtl8187 command.

Hi Atilla,

Can you please capture the following additional debug information while running Lucid:

1) Boot with the rfkill switch disabled (ie wireless should be enabled). Verify wifi is working (if it's not please mention this in your feedback). Regardless, then do the following:
1a) Capture your dmesg output and attach it to the bug report.
1b) Add the the output of doing 'cat /sys/class/rfkill/rfkill0/state' to this bug report

2) Then enable the rfkill switch (ie wireless should be disabled). Verify wifi is disabled (if it's not please mention this in your feedback). Regardless, then again do the following (same as above)
2a) Re-capture your dmesg ouput and attach it to this bug report
2
b) Add the output of doing 'cat /sys/class/rfkill/rfkill0/state'

Please let us know your results. Thanks.

Ok. What place to found this kernel?

If I testing this problem with original kernel, you wroted:
"1) Boot with the rfkill switch disabled (ie wireless should be
enabled). Verify wifi is working (if it's not please mention this in
your feedback). Regardless, then do the following:
1a) Capture your dmesg output and attach it to the bug report.
1b) Add the the output of doing 'cat /sys/class/rfkill/rfkill0/state' to
this bug report"
I not clean understand this. Enough to turn on my wify controller
hardware switch before booting, or need a kernel parameter to test?
Another steps is clean.

Hy,

I look what shows network-manager panel applet my Lucid system when my
wireless controller is enabled with the hardware switch:
Wireless networks
Wireless disabled

ifconfig wlan0 shows the default informations with wlan controller (rx
bites, etc).
But this is true both my wireless controller is enabled or disabled the
hardware switch.

The rtl8187 module is loaded automaticaly both two situation (enabled or
disabled wireless).

This is a bug with network-manager, or bug the rtl8187 driver?

Hy,

Now I updated my system. I upgraded the Kernel version with
2.32.10-generic (original update).
The good news is:
My wlan controller works fine if I turn on the hardware switch any time,
and turned off the wlan controller when I turned off the hardware switch.
I see Network-manager the Enable vireles connections checkmenu item
again when I turned on the hardware switch.

Thank you the fix,
