Bug Description

Laptop: HP Pavilion dv2699ee
Docking station: Targus ExpressCard Notebook Docking Station ACP60EU
Release: Ubuntu 8.10 32 bit with all updates applied, kernel 2.6.27-11-generic
Nvidia driver: 177.82

Steps to reproduce:
1) Plug in external monitor to the ExpressCard VGA output.
2) Plug in the docking station to laptop via the ExpressCard port.
3) Turn on laptop.

Expected output:
The external monitor connected to the docking station should be recognized and able to configure the output via nvidia-settings.

Actual output:
Video output does not work through the Targus ExpressCard docking station. In nvidia-settings and the Gnome screen resolution applet, the external monitor is not shown. (It is shown when connected directly to the VGA output on the laptop rather than the docking station). Note that the docking station itself seems to be recognized since mouse and keyboard work when plugged in to the USB ports on the docking station.

Can you provide more information about the docking station ?
Please look at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies and give results of the 4 commands of "Minimal information".

Sorry for the delay, I miss the new results.

I'm not sure that the docking was plug when you run lspci-vvnn. I only saw 4 PCI Express Ports, but I cannot see the express card of the docking station. Was it really plugged-in ? Can you run lspci-vvnn if not ?
Thanks.

I have regenerated the file as requested with the docking station plugged in and for reference also generated when it was not plugged in.

This is the difference between the two files:

martin@martin-laptop:~$ diff lspci-vvnn.with.log lspci-vvnn.without.log

Thanks for the results. In fact lspci only report internal hardware. I don't have any external PCI-E devices and didn't know how to get information for these. Can you try this command that should return expected information please (with the docking station pluged in) ?
$ ls -lt /sys/bus/pci/slots

Martin Hammer (martin.hammer) wrote :

ls -lt /sys/bus/pci/slots does not return anything whether or not the docking station is plugged in:

martin@martin-laptop:~$ sudo ls -lt /sys/bus/pci/slots/
total 0

However, it's definitely recognizing the docking station via ExpressCard since all the USB ports on the docking station itself work fine (for USB drives and mouse & keyboard).
